Foxes Come Up Short With Loss To Garden City In Girls Lax State Final

Fox Lane took an early lead, but their Incredible season ended with a loss to the the now four-time defending champions from Long Island.

Just when Fox Lane's girls lacrosse team thought it was comfortable, the Garden City express got rolling and spoiled all the fun.

Garden City scored 13 of the last 15 goals in its 20-10 win over the Foxes in the state Class B final on Saturday at SUNY Cortland.

The Foxes won their first section title this season and were playing in their first state title, while Garden City won its fourth-straight Class B title and 11th overall.

Fox Lane (19-4) took a 6-1 lead on Kailey O'Hagan's free-position goal with 17:06 left in the first half, but Caroline Tarzian, who finished with a game-high seven goals, started a 6-0 run just 14 seconds later. Tarzian's third goal gave Garden City (21-0) its first lead of the day at 7-6.

"When we left Bedford on Thursday we said we were going to leave it all on the field, and we did," said Fox Lane Coach Bill Broggy. "We knew when we won yesterday [19-11 over Watertown] that it was going to be Garden City. And I read the paper, so I knew how good they are."

His girls didn't buy into the Garden City hype early on, and played unafraid.

Lindsay Toppe, who finished with four goals, opened the scoring 1:03 into the game. Sammy Jo Tracy had two goals and an assist in the opening run, and finished with three goals and one assist.

"We had to play the perfect game, which we did in the first 10 minutes," Broggy said. "And then we started turning the ball over. You could see their athleticism in the second half take over."

A turnover led to Tarzian's goal at the first-half buzzer that gave Garden City a 9-8 lead.

Fox Lane has just three seniors, and the Foxes start two freshmen and five sophomores, so Broggy believes they'll be back.

"This is a real program builder to make it this far," Broggy said. "At practice, I say who are we practicing for. It was always John Jay and Yorktown. Now the standard is Garden City."

Added Toppe: "My expectation is that I want to be back here. We want to play Garden City next year in the finals and bring it to them and really show them what we can do."
