'Any Human Heart' is a Great Escape

The show takes a look at Logan Mountstuart, a character who is a writer witnessing major events in the 20th century.

Google "masterpiece theatre," watch online, and sit back and enjoy the show. The latest series of this program, entitled Any Human Heart, is a great escape for mom.

The show is a dramatized version of William Boyd’s eponymous book which begins with this quote from Henry James, “Never say you know the last word about any human heart.” It foreshadows the tumultuous journey about to be undertaken by the protagonist, a writer named Logan Mountstuart.

In this fast-paced story, key facets of the 20th century play a major role. When Mountstuart’s career as a novelist is at a standstill, his agent proposes journalism. While covering the Spanish Civil War, he meets and befriends Ernest Hemingway. During the Second World War, he meets and becomes embroiled in a scandal involving the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (key personages depicted most recently in the movie The King’s Speech).

Love and loss plague Mountstuart. While lamenting the fact that his second novel never seems to take shape, he reads aloud notes he is making in his journal. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this narrative becomes his memoirs.

From the moment, Laura Linney introduces the program until the third and final episode, mom will be on the edge of her seat. Each part ends with a cliffhanger. It’s intrigue at its finest.
