Concerts for Late Summer: A Guide for Music Close to Home

A run down of performances near by.

It's not too late to catch the sound of music in the summertime, whether in Westchester or with a staycation. Plan a picnic, grab a blanket and celebrate summer by partaking in a concert. Offerings run the gamut in several music genres. Here's a look at what's on tap for the remainder of the season:

At the Tarrytown Music Hall, The Rhythm Devils take the stage tonight. This group was initially started by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and his percussionist Mickey Hart. Kreutzmann will appear with his new ensemble. He will be accompanied by artists on bass, guitar, and talking drum.

The organization Jazz Forum Arts is presenting a 90th birthday salute to Charlie Parker on Sunday. This concert will be held at the Beczak Environmental Education Center in Yonkers.

Over in New City, in Rockland County, the Borderline Folk Music Club will hold its annual picnic, singing party and jam this Sunday at noon. It will be at the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Reservations are required.

Upstate, in the Ulster County community of Highmount, the The Belleayre Music Festival still has a few performances, including Belleayre Festival Opera (featuring Rossini's Cinderella) tonight at 8 p.m., and the Aaron Neville Quintet on Sept. 4, during Labor Day weekend.

For those looking to venture a bit further afield, the music festival at Tanglewood in the Berkshires has performances left. Tonight, Emanuel Ax will play the piano in a program of Brahms and Dvorak. A Bach and Beethoven performace will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. On Sept. 1, Crosby, Stills and Nash take center stage.
