Missing Teen Found in New Castle

Article written by Christopher Cavanaugh.

A massive search for a missing special-needs teen ended happily Monday evening at approximately 6:00 PM when Gregory McCarthy walked out of a yard and up to Sgt Koehler of the Westchester County Police, at Inningwood and Pinesbridge Roads in New Castle. “I was so happy to see him,” said Sgt. Koehler, “what a happy relief.”

Gregory was missing since being last seen at about 9:30 AM. His parents called the police, and a progressively larger search ensued in the area of Inningwood Rd., Pinesbridge Rd., Somerstown Rd. and Maryknoll. The New Castle Police requested assistance first from the Westchester County Police and the Millwood Fire Department. According to Chief Santone of the Millwood Fire Department, he also received help from the Ossining, Yorktown, Croton, Chappaqua, and Briarcliff fire departments.

The Westchester County Police enlisted the help of their K9 unit, and a helicopter from the aviation unit. All police departments in the area received bulletins to be on alert, along with photos of Gregory. Police and fire set up a command post in a Maryknoll parking lot.

Gregory’s father, Jay McCarthy, said “I am overwhelmed emotionally by the response and help from the police and fire departments. I cannot thank everyone enough.”

Social media also helped in the search. A tweet from Greg’s brother Rob McCarthy, a Nixle alert from the New Castle Police, and posts on Facebook inspired many citizens to help in the search as well.
