Greeley Nominated for 'Green Ribbon' Program

Horace Greeley High School has long been known by folks in the community for being a high-performing school. Now, it has another distinction: a nomination for the U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools Program, an honor tied to sustainability and environmental teaching.

New York State Education Commissioner John King announced the nomination Thursday in a press release. Four schools have been nominated for the program, with three of them, including Greeley, being in Westchester County. The other schools are Crompond Intermediate School in Yorktown Heights, Rye Country Day School in Rye and Hubert Humphrey P.S. 057 in Staten Island.

The program, the commissioner's announcement states, "recognizes schools where staff, students, officials and communities have worked together to produce energy efficient, sustainable and healthy school environments and to ensure the environmental literacy of graduates."

U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan will announce the Green Ribbon winners on April 23, which is Earth Day.
