Chappaqua Helps Breezy Point

Jen Cook describes her trip to the Rockaways to help people hit by Sandy.

While Hurricane Sandy left thousands in New Castle without power, its damage in Breezy Point, Queens was even worse, as many homes were destroyed.

Jen Cook, who runs the Chappaqua Wellness Center, wanted to do something to help those hit, and started a supplies drive to collect items. On Monday and Friday, she went to Breezy Point and delivered items to the Rockaway Point Fire Department.

Writing to Patch, Cook described Breezy Point as having resilience.

"They lost 110 homes in a terrible fire, including their own. But everyday they continue to work helping their community first before dealing with their own homes.  And the most impressive part was the smiles they shared with one another without a single COMPLAINT," she wrote.

Cook also wrote about the contrasts between Breezy Point and locally, noting the difference between losing electricity versus a home.

Collections were collected with Healthy Choice Apothecary and Le Jardin du Roi, Cook explained, and came form people not only in Chappaqua but nearby, from communities including Pleasantville, Armonk, Bedford, Briarcliff Manor and Pound Ridge.
