Autism Walk Draws Local Supporters

For several years, members of Mount Kisco's DiChiara family have been coming to the annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks.

Jenn DiChiara, whose older sister has autism and whose family came to support her, noted that autism awareness has grown over time and hopes that in the future it will not be around anymore.

The family members were among an estimated turnout of about 15,000 that came to the walk, held Sunday at New York Presbyterian Hospital's White Plains campus.

The annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks, held Sunday at New York Presbyterian Hospital's White Plains campus, enjoyed a large turnout and fundraising, an organizer said.

Organizer Christie Godowski, who gave the turnout figure, also said that there was about $600,000 having been raised before the event itself. The attendees came mainly from Westchester and Fairfield counties.

Peter Faustino, a school psychologist at the Bedford Central School District, was at the event with several Fox Lane High School students. The district's high school and middle each have autism awareness clubs and had a teaming walking.

Faustino called it "probably the best day of the year for me," noting it is because he works during the year to raise autism awareness.

Fox Lane students are at the walk offering cheers.

The walk offered a chance for folks to raise awareness about autism and to support the cause of treating it. The event's proceeds will be used for supporting the work of Autism Speaks, which includes awareness, advocacy, research and family services.

Scarsdale's Ellen Cohen, a volunteers chair for the walk, noted that there were several activities for people, including bouncy rides, face painting, tattoos and a community services section that families of people with autism can use.

“Well, we have great activities for everyone,” she said.
