Post Office Loses Mt. Kisco Tax Bills

Mount Kisco village property tax bills have been lost by the post office, according to officials, creating a major disruption ahead of a July 1 payment deadline.

The loss was discovered last week, Village Manager James Palmer said. The bills were hand delivered from the receiver of taxes' office on May 31 at the Mount Kisco post office, with the post office acknowledge receiving them, he said. The disappearance appears to have happened during a phase in which the bills were intended to be sent to a White Plains regional processing center, the next stop of the trip before taxpayers receive them.

The village is in the process of mailing out new bills, according to Palmer, and are intended to be sent to the post office on Tuesday. This time, however, the plan is to have them go from the Mount Kisco post office directly to the taxpayers. The post office will take care of additional mailing costs.

Even with the delay, taxpayers are still required to pay their taxes by deadline, which is due to state law.

“It's totally outside the village's control," Palmer said.

To address the time loss, Mayor Michael Cinrich suggested that village hall to stay open longer or have weekend operation.

In a letter to taxpayers, Receiver of Taxes Joann Cerretani gave a recap of what happened, expressing her own frustration with the loss.

"As your Receiver of Taxes, I am very upset over this isolated issue with the Post Office and the loss of our Village tax bills," she wrote. "However, please know I along with the Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer have been working diligently over the past week with not only our local Post Office here in Mount Kisco, but also with representatives from the White Plains Processing Center to resolve this issue."
