Kids, Parents, Gather for Fox Lane Middle School Science Showcase

Exhibits on display covered topics that students took interest in.

From a large sculpture of a tounge to a primer on how lava lamps work, students at Fox Lane Middle School had an array of exhibits on display for the annual Science Showcase on Thursday.

The showcase is to "just really celebrate school the way it ought to be," said Principal AnneMarie Berardi. She explained that the event lets kids investigate what they are interested in.

The spirit of the event was noteworthy with the fact that many of the topics the kids explored ranged from conventioned scientific examples to applying science to unique areas, whether it was comparisons of tap water or asking whether or not mood affects plants.

Andrea Byrne, a Pound Ridge resident whose sixth-grade daughter Hannah was part of a group project on tasting water, said it nurtures the idea that thought is vital to inquiry.

"It's going to be fun," said classmate Alyssa Devito, who worked on the water tasting project, about the event.

Interested in the science projects, Steve Sullo, Mount Kisco, said there was "a lot of cool stuff here." His sixth-grade son, Seth, worked with classmates on a project that looked into which materials would be best for making a basketball.

In addition to the projects, tables were set up for area groups such as the Bedford Audobon Society and the BOCES Tech Center in Yorktown.
